Shaking off weight gain comments

How do you deal with weight related comments from people who mean well?

I was catching up with a group and I was sharing my fertility hardship with a friend who also had trouble conceiving (she has since had a baby girl and is expecting a second one- yay!). For her, she was overweight and was advised by the doctor she needed to lose weight and reach the ‘healthy’ range of the BMI scale. After months of hard work she successfully did so which helped her fall pregnant.

My friend, meaning well, said I looked a bit fat and advised I work on losing weight. I felt crushed as I am within the healthy BMI range (albeit on the high end), have gone back to the gym, and my doctor I have been consulting for fertility said I seemed balanced (not skinny, not overweight) which is ideal for pregnancy.

I admit I have gained weight since I last saw the group 2 years ago from ~59kg to 65kg (145lbs) due to a more sedentary lifestyle during lockdown. I am 166cm (5”5.5) and I am currently trying to get back to my pre-covid weight. Still, it wasn’t easy to hear this comment about my body, though I know it comes from a good place.

What do you do when you receive unwanted comments about your weight?
