Hello everyone!
I was recently tested for TSH and the levels came up to be 5.25. While the levels are not that high, the doctor suggested taking the test again after a month to make sure I do have hypothyroidism. However, I am thinking that as of now, I have an underactive thyroid. And my friend with the same condition said there is a chance that I might end up having it. I also researched and read that it might take a couple of months for medicines to kick in and do their job. Until then, I have to work with what I have got and continue to progress.
I read that the calories out part might be lower on average because of the underactive thyroid. I want to adjust my calories according to my needs. I am 5'6"5 and 194lbs. I need to lose about 60lbs. I plan on doing daily weight training and a brisk walk as cardio. I am 22 years old and male. My current maintenance is about 2200 calories. I used to aim to eat around 1800 calories, but now thinking of reducing it to 1500. Should I decrease more, like ~1300 calories? Or it is okay to keep it around 1500?
I know that it is too early for this, but I want to plan ahead in the worst-case scenario. If I am diagnosed with hypothyroidism and given a prescription, I still have a few months to adjust to them. That is a lot of progress lost if I don't keep up with my work. I already feel very uncomfortable physically, with breathing being difficult and my heart rate being higher. I am also ending up with lots of gloominess and sadness, I think any progress will keep me motivated. While one part of health might be affected for life, I don't want to get anything avoidable. Please help! And do correct any misinformation.
