Sick after a workout

I’m kind of out of shape and after about two months of not working out I went for a kickboxing class yesterday. It was so ridiculously tough that even the most fit guys were struggling to finish. I started coughing, felt light headed, had a dry mouth and just felt horrible overall. Today I’ve had a terrible headache, nausea, muscle pain and I’m still coughing.

It’s a terrible realisation but I’m not fit enough to do this again and I have to quit.

How do I get fitter/ lose weight without pushing myself too far too soon? I’m tired of my unhealthy lifestyle and I’ve been trying to eat healthier and work out. But how do I do it without trying to kill myself? Is a light workout really enough to lead a healthy life?
