Hi everyone, I'm pretty new to the community and my health changes. I have heard so many say that the first step to weight loss is figuring out mental issues and connections with food or health. I just have some questions on that.
First, I want to give some context. I'm 23(F), SW: 365-ish lbs. I have been obese my entire life, I remember being about 180 in 5th or 6th grade. Very recently I had my breaking moment, where I realized my sedentary lifestyle, poor emotional/mental health, and physical health were affecting relationships around me. It was a cycle of thinking "I don't want to be this way forever" while continuing to sit around all day sulking and do nothing about it and continue to treat my body poorly.
My questions are about the mental aspects of food. I know a lot of people have weight issues related to food because of binge eating, emotional eating, etc. When I try to think critically on my issues with food, I don't think I suffer from binge eating or emotional eating. I know for sure that my portion control is wild, I have eyes way bigger than my stomach but I would push my stomach to the limit. I also understand that I fall easily to boredom eating. I do have mental/emotional issues, but I actually find that I DON'T eat or I eat much less when I'm anxious or stressed. So here are my questions:
- Do all people who are obese (to my extent at 350+ lbs) necessarily have mental issues with food?
- For those who have lost weight or are losing, how did you start your mental journey during your physical one?
I have so far been determined because I keep telling myself that I'm done being this way, and no one can change it but me. I also want to be as honest with myself as possible, and find where my weak points are so I can be better prepared for them. I feel like overeating and boredom eating problems are... too simple. On the mental health note, I do plan on seeing a therapist consistently in the New Year, so that is my first step on that. Any insight or advice is appreciated, thanks.
